Humble Beginnings

Prior to real estate I spent eight years in commercial construction and completed thirty-five new buildings along with thirty renovations. As this chapter in my life came to an end I spent eight years ministering among different congregations. These years were very beneficial for learning the value of work in construction, and of service and faith in ministry.

In 1982 I joined Homer Griffin Real Estate Before I became eligible for the Broker Exam, my father unexpectedly passed away. It was a devastating loss for us. I was able to qualify for the exam a few weeks later and became Broker in January, 1985.

Later that same month I received a call from a lady wanting to sell eight acres of dry farm land. I agreed to drive out and look at the land. At that time market value for land was $500 to $600 an acre. She wanted $5,000 an acre! I hesitated…….but she needed my help!

I have to admit I was pretty green back then. As I drove back to town I wondered about many things. “How did I get here?” “Am I doing the right thing?” “Sure miss Dad.” As I got to town my pickup was nearly out of gas. I pulled into a station. As I started to fill it, as El Camino pulled into the middle of the lot and parked away from the pumps. The door opened and a man I had never seen wearing a straw hat got out and walked directly to me. “My boss wants to buy five to ten acres of land in the country,” he said. “Do you know anyone who has some for sale?”

Upon regaining consciousness, I showed them the property and wrote the contract. We closed in a couple of weeks.

” I will lift up my eyes unto the hills from whence comes my help. “
